Kudos to Carmel for doing such an outstanding job! Way better than Carmel, CA!!!

Yes political views have nothing to do with city urban issues, see, California is bery car dependent even tho it's democrat "heaven".

From what I have seen transforming a car centric area's roads to work with cyclists takes time. It is not obvious where all the trails need to be.

The main problem bike riding in Carmel (I live in west Carmel) is the crossing areas on traffic circles are way too close to the circle itself. Very dangerous. If the engineers thought through this a bit more and moved them back maybe 20-30 feet or so drivers in the circle could actually stop for cyclist and pedestrians crossing. It is a game of Frogger more often than not.

I live here. Everybody including myself were super sceptical. Now I feel like an idiot. This is a lovely solution.

"Free water" Are public water fountains not common in the Netherlands?

The US has over 120,000 roundabouts. Stop saying they aren't common.

Not a single bus or train route goes anywhere near Carmel, so a car is basically required.

What a precious wee mini-roundabout! 🥰💕❤🥰 But if every cyclist here were driving a car 🚗, a pick-up 🛻, or an SUV 🚙 instead, the junction would be a hopelessly congested traffic light intersection instead.

I hope the Atlanta Beltline takes some tips from this town. There isn't much diversity there in Carmel though.

I live less than an hour from here, and with this, the only Orthodox church around, and my doctor being here, it is my dream town. Too bad the houses are twice the price of my little town.

Wonderful video so heartwarming. I live in the UK we have no cycling infrastructure or integrated transport system,the Northern leg of (HS2)High Speed 2 was cancelled and we have Brexit.

Something to keep in mind. NYC has always (at least for the last 200 years) been an intense place with lots of people and lots of traffic. In the days with horse drawn vehicles the streets could have a thick layer of excrement.. good old days 😊. So yes NYC is and has been gritty for just bout forever. None the less, it’s an amazing place to visit. 20 years ago just about zero bike infrastructure existed. To ride a bike in NYC back then was more than an adventure. Watch to old movie Quick Silver about bike messengers, that gives you an idea of how insane it was to ride. I hasn’t been to NYC in 8 years and was absolutely flabbergasted by the amount of bike infrastructure and how much use it was getting last fall. Not just bike delivery people, this was all sorts of people. I was also amazed at how many bike share bikes were being utilized. Also also saw a few parents with kids on the bad, being dropped off at school in the Lower West Side right in the boers with China Town. It’s literally a night a day difference in just 10 short years. Traffic was still absolutely insane to get to one of the main bridges near where we were staying. On a couple,p of occasions Google Mals showed us that it would be faster to take a ride share bike then either by car or by public transport. I’d be game, but my wife has physical issues that make bike riding absolutely impossible. Even talking requires a cane or rollator… too bad, I would have like to pedal around.

AS I watch everyone has the same style of bike and none of them look anything like American bikes.

I grew up a stone's throw from the former station in Waalwijk. There were still many remnants of the rails back than and some hand operated switches. There also still was a building with raised a platform, but I believe it wasn't the former station, but the adjacent warehouse. It was in use by a transport company (Van Gend en Loos) which use the raised the platforms to load their trucks.

In year 1900. CPH. was known as the European Capitol of Cyclist, 70, 80, and 90, was a dark period, stand still, no cycle budget, but then something happends, the cycle budget rapidly grow, and dobbled many times, and lot of progress happends. So CPH came back on the track, and is still the Cycle-Capitol. Cycle infra structure, has now become standard in most modern cities, Holland is about the size of Jutland, and is three times as many, so in general, it might be the most developed Cycle Country. Lot of good improvement is realized since the video, and thousands of trees.

It’s a shame that cost of living effects walkable cities in America there a trend, the more walkable the city the more expensive NYC San Francisco Washington DC are unlivable by middle class standards people are moving to the south where they’re forced to get a car and drive through terrible urban planning and live in hoa dominant suburbs rich people moving to the south displaces wildlife farms forests culture heritage and people

Carmel is nice. But you cant live car free. There is no public transit whatsoever. You still need a car to do anything. And all that development he mentioned is jice but thwres no essentials there. No grocery store or hardware store. Just restaurants and aapartments and boutique shops for the camera. Separated Zoning still kills the city.

My! I thought Copenhagen was a pedestrians' heaven! But there's overwhelming and dangerous bicycle and car traffic there! Although the environment has become less polluted and riders have gained better cardiovascular health, pedestrians have become the losers here because they have to be extremely cautious when walking on the sidewalks or crossing the streets! Therefore, traffic authorities will probably have to assign some streets to pedestrians and bicycle traffic and some to car traffic! Sidewalks should strictly be for pedestrians and the pavement (roadways) for bicycles! Now, the number of cars driven a week should be limited to 1/4 of the total! That'd force car drivers to ride their bikes or use public transportation! Finally, massive bicycle parking is essential for the system to work properly! Thus, Denmark has made a huge, exemplary effort to humanize traffic and improve the environment, but there's still a lot of work to be done! Thanks for sharing! ☘️🇩🇰☘️

Based on recent visit, NY has a lot more bike infrastructure (and riders) than would think. Still a long way to go. Harsh to compare NY outright with European cities - which are tiny in comparison

I just moved nearby Portland and I’m excited that there are more biking options. However, it’s scary to think about the extent of the car-centric system spanning the US

Every time I see people riding in the US I get war flashbacks to riding there before I moved to the Netherlands. Now a bike ride and my city are both highlights of my day rather than hellish torture

It may not be a true cycling city, but Google Maps will now route you through the most possible bike lanes with color coating denoting the type. The “best route” option typically gives me the most bike friendly route sometimes adding an extra half mile to my trip in order to keep me on “protected” bike lanes for a greater percentage of it.

I've seen a lot of videos on the roundabouts in Carmel but this is the first I've seen on the other infrastructure. I'm impressed.
